In a recent presentation, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pointed out that computing power is now doubling every six months, signaling a seismic shift in the tech landscape. This development aligns with the new paradigm known as Scaling Laws, which has effectively superseded Moore's Law. Unlike the earlier metric of transistor count, the new currency in this era is tokens per dollar per watt—a measure of how efficiently AI models process data relative to energy and cost.

The Shift from Moore’s Law to Scaling Laws

Moore's Law, which predicted a doubling of transistors in an integrated circuit every two years, set the pace for the computing world for decades. But as the limits of silicon-based semiconductors near, Scaling Laws have taken the spotlight, focusing on the efficiency of AI workloads rather than raw computational capability. This shift has huge implications for industries across the board. As AI systems become cheaper and more powerful, their application in various sectors will dramatically increase.

Market Impact of Increased Computing Power

The growth of computing power is not only driving the expansion of AI but also facilitating the shrinking of devices capable of running advanced AI models. This is a key development for industries like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Digital Transformation, where smaller, more powerful devices will enable more seamless and intelligent operations. For example, smart factories, connected healthcare devices, and autonomous vehicles will become increasingly efficient and reliable as AI-driven insights become more accessible.

Apple's M2 Ultra chip, with its 800GB/s bandwidth, also supports such tasks.

However, the technology continues to advance. The recently launched A18 Pro chips, boasting a bandwidth of 2TB/s, are pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Although these chips are not yet widely available due to their high cost, the trend indicates that real-time AI services such as simultaneous translation will soon become more common. The challenge remains in democratizing access to these powerful technologies, but the progress is undeniable.

Robotics will also benefit greatly from the increase of compute power and will be applied to many fields.

The rapid increase in computing power is not confined to specialized hardware; it’s also making its way into everyday consumer devices. The evolution of smartphone chips is a prime example. With the average upgrade cycle of smartphones at around four years, we are likely only three years away from a future where many users will have access to a variety of AI services right on their phones.

Simultaneous translation, advanced health coaching, AI-driven personal finance, and investment management are just a few examples of the services that will become widely available. Beyond smartphones, the proliferation of AI-powered IoT devices, from smart home systems to wearable health monitors, will further integrate AI into daily life.

Perhaps the most exciting frontier of AI is the rise of robotics. As AI chips grow more powerful and affordable, robots will become more autonomous and versatile.
